They both became quiet, looking across Raidon's saddle at one another. Raidon made a horsy sound, halfway between a grunt and a whinny. Sai smiled, mind diverted. Sora too felt like smiling, for Raidon's presence somehow lightened everything. But, seeing Sai, she scowled instead.
"We can't afford to have another confrontation with Deputies," she said, her voice taking the tone of authority. Her dark eyes briefly pressed into Sai as that morning's events turned over in her mind. Another confrontation. The more she thought about it, the more she realized they hadn't needed to kill those Deputies. Hadn't needed to fight them at all. Sai Kobayashi, a loose cannon and a liability, for all his quick reflexes and skill with a gun. Because of his quick reflexes and skill with a gun.
Sai dropped his smile and snapped, "We can afford as many confrontations as bullets I have." As pretty as Sora was, Sai
wasn't sure if she was worth the frustration. Those Deputies had been in the act of recognizing them, and would have shot to kill without any hesitation if he hadn't shot first. There was no question about that. Not even Sora had suggested that. No question, and no choice.
